What makes kids happy — an afterthought

August 22nd, 2007 ~ Potpourri for 100, Alex

While deleting more of the stupid spam e-mail that I get, it occurred to me that there’s even more reason for people over 25 to feel convicted by this recent study. Remember that when these kids 13-24 were polled and asked what made them happy, they rarely said “money” or “sex.”

But if spam is any indicator, those of us who aren’t kids anymore have a lot more trouble with our priorities. Because that’s what most of those pitches are about — more sex, better sex, fast money, more money.

I know it’s not exactly a scientific comparison. I wouldn’t try to say that spam is a totally accurate barometer of the interests of the general populace. But let’s just say that those salacious pitches for our attention didn’t come about because of a lack of interest.

Anyway, just a thought.

You could also say that the prevailing themes in spam, like the prevailing themes in the movies, tell us what the producers are fixated on, rather than what the consumers are fixated on. Which means that people who send spam are fat, bald, impotent, dateless, and broke. Hah! I knew it!

So those who can’t do, spam. I like it.
