The Senate confirmed Roberts! Well, hoo-ray for not dragging this thing out any longer. I thought I had read something this morning that was floating out the other F-word — filibuster. But maybe everyone thought better of it. And anyway, they’ll have another candidate in a few days, and goodness knows they’ll have plenty of opportunity to knock themselves out on that one. Chances are that person will give them more grist than Roberts did. When your biggest complaint is that he’s not giving you anything to complain about, you know times is scarce.

So Bush succeeded in getting someone appointed to Chief Justice who maybe kinda sorta isn’t all that liberal even though he can’t be counted on as a regular conservative vote either. Well, times is scarce for us, too, if that counts as something to celebrate. But given what candidates Kerry would’ve appointed if he would’ve won (Howard Dean? Mario Cuomo? Ward Churchill? Someone from France?), I’ll take it as a good thing.
