State Of Fear

Michael Crichton fans won’t be disappointed with his latest. For those who have loved “Andromedra Strain”, “Jurassic Park” and the other, what, 300? or so books he’s written, you’ll find his trademark edge-of-your-seat thriller with pages and pages of enough scientific back-story to make you think that if it hasn’t happened yet, it could at any moment.

But there’s a whole other level at which to appreciate this book. Crichton, whose credentials as a scientist are impressive, undertook this book to combat the myths and expose the bad science behind most of the hype about global warming. And he does an absolutely great job of it as near as I can tell. His tale of scientist/secret agent guys travelling the globe to head off the staged disasters of eco-terrorists is laced with conversations from the good guys punctuated with charts, graphs, footnotes and Web-sites to underscore their point. Crichton says in the foreward that these aren’t fictional. They’re all readily accessible to anyone. And they paint a very clear picture that the entire argument of global warming that is, at least, very flimsy.

So a worthwhile, can’t-put-it-down read AND something to arm yourself with next time you hear that the planet is melting. Cool!
