Really red counties

Here’s a map that Greg sent me of the breakouts of Christian churches by county throughout the country. (Click on the image to enlarge it).

Well, we can certainly understand why everyone thought Huckabee would win in South Carolina.

Kind of humbling that we Orthodox are sharing the “Other” category with Quakers and Adventists. Boy, talk about taking the crumbs that fall from the table.

You are right; that is quite humbling… But look at Alaska - that’s our Orthodox brothers and sisters speaking :) Well, hopefully.

You know, I couldn’t tell whether it was or not. The Orthodox counties should be gray with a number 5 in the middle. I tried to blow this up in Photoshop to read those teensy numbers, but I couldn’t. All the same, they don’t look like 5’s in Alaska.

The other thing on the index I wish someone could explain to me is what’s up with those yellow counties designated as “Christian.” Um, s’cuse me? So the rest of these are Catholic Jewish and Baptist Hindu or something?

  3. Tanya Said:

oh, i think you are right…. I can’t read the numbers, either, but they look more like 2 and 7 than 5… :(
and yes, the “Christian” category raised my eyebrows, too. Maybe they mean non-denominational Christian?

Yeah, I was kind of wondering about Jewish myself.

I tried to find the original location on the Website where this map appeared to see if they explained things a little, but I couldn’t. I’ll dive in again and see if I can clear things up.

In the meantime, though, this is handy for showing the big picture if it’s a little confusing in the details.

According to statements I’ve read by Bishop Nikolai of the OCA’s Russian Orthodox Diocese of Alaska, Orthodoxy is the largest, and fastest growing, church in Alaska. I’m scheduled to take a business trip to Anchorage in early April. I’ll be very interested to see if I can “tell” it’s Orthodox Lent while I’m there.

That will be interesting. I took an Alaskan cruise last spring, and I admit I was a little disappointed on that front, but I probably had unrealistic expectations. I was kind of thinking that you’d see Orthodox churches there the way you see Baptist and Methodist churches here, which is to say that most of the churches turn out to be one of those two things. On the other hand, I really wasn’t in Anchorage for very much time. I saw the towns that are the tourist stops on the cruise — Ketchkikan, Skagway, Juneau and others. Maybe Anchorage has a more Orthodox feel to it if you hang around long enough to see.

In any case, it’s bound to be an interesting business trip.

Absolutely. I’ve never been up there, so I’m pretty excited. I’d love to make it to Presanctified Liturgy at St. Innocent Cathedral while I’m there.

My sense is it will at least be on the radar screen, in a way it is NOT in Northern California!
