Hush your heart
August 3rd, 2008 ~ Orthodox perspectiveI didn’t realize it had been so long since I had anything to say. Well, as Greg will attest, it’s not that I haven’t had anything to say — he probably wishes I had nothing to say. It’s just that the new workflow I talked about really eats up the time I used to put in here. I miss the chance to blather politely along about this and that. But then, given this quote from yesterday’s “Daily Lives,” it may be just as well that I’ve got a little imposed silence going on:
If your tongue is used to chattering, your heart will remain dim and foreign to the lumionous intuitions of the Holy Spirit. But if your mouth is silent, your heart will ever be aflame with the spirit … hush your tongue that your heart may speak, and hush your heart that God may speak.
– St. John of Dalyatha
I particularly like that last part, especially these days when the brand of Christianity most people are exposed to is the kind that is all about talking (and talking and talking) about how God makes you feel, how knowing the Lord gives you a warm glow, how you can sense the Holy Spirit in this place or that. I’m as fond of warm glows as the next person, but it seems to me to give too much credit to feelings. Mine, at least, aren’t nearly such perfect indicators of the Holy Spirit’s actions. Better maybe, as the saint says, to just hush.

Thank you! And we note that I couldn’t resist ‘chattering’ out another blog entry, as long as I was in the neighborhood. :-)

Thanks Grace. The noise and my contribution to it are problems. Trying to have something to say - just another. Thinking about NOT saying it… priceless.
