Pope detente and good lions
June 22nd, 2005 ~ Orthodox perspectiveWell, are we going to make nice with the Vatican or not? Moscow says “nyet”; Kiev says “da”. The Greek patriarch says “we can”; one Greek theologian says “we can’t”. I seem to recall that opinions on the Ortho-blogosphere have tended toward the negative.
I sure wish that we could, but it goes without saying that it would be unacceptable to form some sort of sham alliance that required us to compromise on the things that we regard as (capital ‘o’) Orthodox. I find myself wishing that we could at least hear them out a little. I know we don’t want to cater to public opinion, but I don’t see what’s advisable in utterly disregarding it either, especially if the biggest reason we have for swatting away the olive branch is because of past grievances or festering spite.
On a totally unrelated story that just makes you feel good, check out this story of three lions in Ethiopia who chased off a girl’s attackers and guarded her until help came. A troika of Aslans!
