Four guys, one cello

March 18th, 2007 ~ Just a slice of heaven, Pop goes the culture

So what do you do in a musical family when you’ve got four musicians, four bows and only one cello?

Apparently, you do Ravel’s Bolero for eight hands.

(By the way, as BJohnD noted, the “Burqa Blue” video a couple posts back is no longer available to be embedded. Don’t know what the deal is there, but if you didn’t get a chance to see it and wanted to, the link is HERE. Be warned though, it’s the kind of repetitive little ditty that gets stuck in your head.)

    Isn’t that neat?

We saw “Bolero” performed in concert last month, and then this crossed my desk just a few days afterwards. True brilliance.

Well, it seems to me that this version shortens it by a couple minutes, right? Which is a blessing really. It’s a musical cliche at this point, so it should be unassailable, but I always thought it was a little on the repetitive side. You just can’t wait for that big dramatic key change to happen.

Yes, because it was about 15 minutes live.

Something so refreshing for a piece that’s become so passe.
You find all the good stuff!
