Poignant. It also assumes that Islam seeks toleration for and from other ‘beliefs’, and I’m honestly not sure that is the case.

(sigh) I guess I have to admit I’ve been coming to the same conclusion. I think I believe that these rioters don’t speak for all Muslims. But they are allowed to talk as if they did, and that sends a message that Muslims either (a) aren’t opposed to this violence or (b) aren’t capable of wresting power away from them. In either case, I think we can skip the idea that we all just need to “dialogue.” You can’t dialogue with insane people waving weapons.

  3. Jim N. Said:

This is true. Which puts the West at an extreme disadvantage, because we’re accustomed to our protocols and being able to, shall we say, ‘purchase’ what is needed to ensure a desirable outcome. It’s how modern man does things. But now we’re confronted with something very primal, with people who, right or wrong, actually believe something about something. That in itself is a jolting reality to our embeded pluralism.

  4. Grace Said:

That’s it, isn’t it? Rightly or wrongly, a lot of the Muslim world just isn’t working out of the same rulebook.
