Den of thieves update

May 26th, 2007 ~ Potpourri for 100, Alex

icon-egg-001.jpgA couple years ago, Greg the Husband wanted to see if he could get me some of the wooden eggs painted with iconic rendering for a Christmas present. He found the one shown here offered on ebay — nicely done, obviously John the Baptist as we can tell from the shaggy hair and red wings, right? But here’s the good part. The person offering it up for sale had this headline: Rare Icon of Jesus in His Later Years.

In His later years? You don’t have to be St. Gregory the Theologian to figure out the wrinkle in that theory. When Greg gently suggested to the seller that he had made a mistake and that the icon was probably John the Baptist, the seller kindly thanked him and changed the headline to read: Rare Icon of John the Baptist … in His Later Years. Greg knew then he had to have this once-in-a-lifetime item, and the story has been part of the enjoyment of having it.

That’s ebay for you. Wonderful things, amazing prices. Hard things aren’t hard to find; rare things aren’t rare at all. But … the seller could be anyone and the item could be anything, so caveat emptor – let the buyer beware.

So why bring it up now? Well, because Greg just sent a link my way. (link HERE) Yes, it’s true. For a mere million dollars, you can own a Bible signed by Jesus Christ.

Perhaps in His later years.

(HEAVY sigh) I’m pretty sure the thing is just someone’s idea of a joke, or maybe just a longshot that only has to come in one time to be worth it all. But what do you want to bet some people aren’t going to be sure?

LOL- thats pretty funny (and yes, pathetic.) I guess its more original than the Virgin on the Grilled Cheese auction

Yep, that one was a classic. As I recall, the woman who sold the sandwich seemed totally sincere. She didn’t sound like a scam artist, and she definitely wasn’t being ironic.

This guy, on the other hand, seems like he’s a little of each. Just guessing, though.
