A splendid exhibit at the Getty Museum
December 2nd, 2006 ~ Potpourri for 100, AlexSorry I’ve been such a lazy blogger. It just seems that between work duties, church duties, Christmas prep and travel, I haven’t gotten the nice windows of time that make for worthwhile blog entries. I’ll try to see if I can catch up on some of the things that I’ve had on my mind, because Greg and I are going off on a little cruise starting tomorrow, and I never know if I can find any good blogging time when we do that.
I’m kind of excited, though, because we just realized that flying into LA means that we should be able to take in an exhibit at the J. Paul Getty Museum that I had read about. It’s called “Holy Image, Hallowed Ground: Icons from Sinai.” It’s a look at some of the Byzantine icons from St. Catherine’s Monastery. The icons would be enough of a draw — as a monk comments in their short video, St. Catherine’s has most of the Byzantine icons that still exist — but the article I read (in a secular publication, by the way) made much of the fact that the exhibitors attempted to put the icons in the proper context, to create enough of a monastic and liturgical setting that the viewer understood the function and place of the icons and didn’t just look at them as religious pictures.
That sounds like it has to be good. I was impressed with the museum’s short video (link HERE). It’s easy for things like this to veer into “Look at the funny religious people.” But I thought this was done gracefully. I’m looking forward to the exhibit.
Oh, and the cruise won’t be too shabby either. :-)

Thanks! We’re actually in the SoCal neighborhood — I’m writing this from a hotel in Irvine — but we couldn’t swing an extra day, so we’ll just have to wave towards all you St. B-ites on the way to the port. Phooey.
BTW, went back and caught up on your blog:
1 - what’s with the animated jiggy?
2 - cute picture of you and Sean
3 - I *love* Ruth’s Chris!
